Our History

VMC Management was founded in 1984 by President and CEO,Vera McCants, in response to the need for competent, capable and caring property management expertise for subsidized housing developments. Having spent a lifetime working and volunteering in the housing arena, Ms. McCants first began her property management career in the mid 70’s as Vice President for Inner City Christian Action for Housing, (INCCA). INCCA is an ecumenical council that builds affordable housing developments inPaterson,NJ. During her tenure as INCCA’s Vice President, Ms. McCants learned the ins and outs of sustainable property development. She worked with local, state and federal officials to secure financing and ensure solid construction of low-rise garden apartments and high-rise senior buildings. She worked closely with community leaders, residents and community activists to make certain that the residents’ needs were addressed and met on a regular basis. When INCCA needed a strong business leader to guide its board of directors,Vera McCantsanswered the call.

In her next role with INCCA as Chairman of the Board, she worked with her Board colleagues, site staff and tenants to develop short and long-term strategies that further solidified INCCA’s various properties. Ms. McCants’ expertise in contract negotiation and her extensive knowledge of the affordable and market property development and management industry afforded INCCA the luxury of knowing that its Board of Directors was on top of all critical capital improvement issues and was providing its residents with the ultimate delivery of oversight, advice, counsel and execution. Eventually, because of her demonstrated expertise in property management and her continued commitment to success, INCCA’s Board asked Ms. McCants to take on the role of Executive Director for all of its properties. She happily complied and spearheaded INCCA’s first entry into the development and sale of single-family low-income homes. It was also under Ms. McCants’ watch that Triangle Village, an INCCA property, reached the pinnacle of financial and asset management success. Triangle Village became debt-free and extremely profitable and was sold to private owners.

In 1985, Ms. McCants stepped down from the role of Executive director and VMC Management was hired by INCCA to manage all of its properties.

In the late 80’s,Vera McCantswas joined by her daughter Cheryl McCants, who supported the organization’s operational, strategic and marketing needs. Cheryl McCants, a graduate of Brown University, George Washington University and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism, works with clients to ensure that all regulatory policies, guidelines and other operational needs are taken care of. Her project management expertise has proven instrumental in assisting management teams and Boards of Directors in developing strategic plans that are reasonable, measurable, executable and attainable. Cheryl McCants, a licensed real estate sales person, has first-hand experience as a Site Manager for low-income, subsidized housing and uses this expertise to support VMC’s various site managers in understanding and working through the quagmire associated with balancing on-site maintenance needs, with the heavy demand of paperwork, quality of life issues and regulatory requirements.

During the mid 90’s,Vera McCants’ son, David McCants, joined VMC, where his solid financial and organizational expertise have helped to catapult VMC to new levels of excellence. A graduate ofBrownUniversityand the Columbia University Graduate School of Business, Mr. McCants uses his Wall Street and consulting knowledge to ensure financial and performance efficiency for all VMC properties.
